How Often Must Industrial Track Be Inspected?

Inspection frequency depends on how your track is regulated and used. Federally regulated track must follow the minimum inspection frequencies in Transport Canada's Rules Respecting Track Safety, which vary with track class, tonnage, and traffic type. For provincially regulated industrial trackage, frequency is set by provincial legislation and the serving railway's requirements; as a baseline, we recommend documented visual inspections at least monthly.

We also recommend additional inspections after severe weather, derailments, track work, or unusually heavy traffic, since defects rarely wait for the next scheduled walk-through. A short, documented follow-up inspection after each of these events is one of the cheapest forms of derailment insurance an operator can buy.

What Does a Railway Track Inspection Include?

A professional track inspection evaluates track geometry (gauge, alignment, cross-level, and surface) along with rail condition, joints and fastenings, ties, ballast and drainage, and special trackwork such as switches, frogs, and crossings. Each defect is documented, measured against the applicable safety standard, and classified by severity so you know what needs immediate repair and what can be scheduled and monitored.

Low-speed industrial trackage fails differently than mainline: vegetation, fouled ballast, plate-cut ties, and neglected switches account for many of the defects we find. Our inspectors know where industrial track hides its problems because industrial operations are the core of our practice.

Inspections are performed by qualified railway track inspectors working to Transport Canada's Rules Respecting Track Safety and the Railway Safety Act (R.S.C. 1985, c. 32), with provincial railway standards applied where they govern. That matters because inspection is a regulated competency: a walk-down by untrained maintenance staff does not satisfy a regulator, a serving railway, or an insurer asking who last inspected your track and to what standard.

We inspect for owners of industrial trackage (plants, terminals, elevators, and mines) as well as short line railways, engineering firms, and property managers who have acquired sites with rail assets. If you are buying or leasing a facility with track, a pre-purchase condition inspection tells you what liability you are actually taking on before you sign.

Every inspection produces a written report with defect locations, measurements, photographs, severity classifications, and prioritized remediation recommendations: records you can hand directly to a contractor for repair, or to an auditor as proof of due diligence. Reports distinguish clearly between defects that require immediate protective action (such as removing a track segment from service) and conditions that can be monitored on a defined schedule.
